Happenings~ In The Chicken Coop

Why it's Ugly Betty, (at least we think it's Ugly Betty) she is the biggest of any of the new members. Why is it that the bigger chickens lay the smallest eggs? The first egg came Saturday, when hubby went out to do the night feeding there it was laying in one of the boxes. He brought it into the kitchen, and I knew, because of it's size it had to be from our newest stock. Idn't it cute! Just a little bigger than a pigeon or quails egg.
We are "thrilled to have fresh eggs", It would seem our older stock have stopped laying for now. I've had to buy the last two dozen, they taste Icky, and who knows what sort of hormones may have been fed to the chickens who laid them, (besides, I like the chocolate eggs better, don't you?)
It is so cold here today, the wind still gusting and only going to be in the thirties today. I did let the horses out today, since they have been inside quite a bit for the last few days due to cold temps, wind and rain. Poor things, it is so muddy in lower pasture, but (Vets orders) not to let Scout in the main pasture on count of the Cushings deal. He has had a shoe sucked off in the mud somewhere out there, I have to contact the farrier today to get him out to put another one on. (Luckily, I have an extra pair) all he will have to do is trim off some of the hoof and place the shoe back on.
Scout is much like our youngest child, when she was little she used to take her shoes off at the park and come home barefoot. We lived in the Republic of Panama where a neighbors maid (or perhaps, it was our maid) would find the shoes, and we'd have to buy new ones. (we purchased a lot of jelly shoes in those days) LOL
Our youngest is now 25 years old, she loves shoes to this day, perhaps that was the plan for getting a new pair.
I have to make a few visits around my blog list, come on over anytime to see what may be going on here at the funny farm...

You are so lucky to still be getting eggs. My hens have layed off and I too have had to buy store bought. Not the same as the good "homegrown ones!"{: blessings, Kathleen

My big girls have all but quit on me too, Mel- thank goodness for my little Silkies- they just keep on laying!! Even though their eggs are only about the size of the big girls, it still beats store-bought!
Now if I can just keep them from wanting to sit on them all the time... LOL

Good morning and thanks for stopping in, it's a pleasure to have you all over for a visit. My sister-in-law, shared this hint with me a few months ago (when I called her for some questions on the interior of the chicken coop etc.) she said she placed a bug bulb in her chicken coop, and it kept it warm enough for her chicks to lay all winter. The key is that if you can keep your coop close to 45 degrees F your birds will produce all year round. I love finding eggs, especially; from a new flock, it's like a gift...
